Edo gov: ACN, PDP supporters clash in court

It was a free for all fight yesterday between supporters of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the prescient of the Court of Appeal, venue of governor election petition trial in Benin city, Edo state.

As a result, a former Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ugbor police station in Edo state, DSP George Efezomo, had his skull broken by some suspected members of the ACN.
The incident occurred at the Appeal Court premises, venue of the hearing of the appeal filed by the PDP candidate for the governorship poll in July, General Charles Airhiavbere (Rtd) against Governor Adams Oshiomhole of the ACN.
Efezomo had attempted to broker peace between the warring groups when a Senior Special Assistance to the governor and other supporters descended on and got him bruised.
Arhiavbere is challenging the ruling of the State Election Petition Tribunal which struck out his relief on the discrepancies in the academic qualifications of Oshiomhole.
In a separate appeal however, Oshiomhole is also challenging the jurisdiction of the Court on its decision to continue with other grounds of the petition.
Counsel to Oshiomhole, Wole Olanikpekun (SAN) urged the court to strike out the remaining relief since the main relief (academic qualification) have been struck out by the tribunal.
On his part, counsel to Airhiavbere Chief Akpofure (SAN) argued that the tribunal’s decision to dismiss the applicant’s relief has no constitutional and Electoral Act backing.
Having listened to both arguments, the presiding judge, Justice H.M Ogunmiju, who was supported by Hon Justices S. Yakubu and T.O Awotoye reserved judgment to a later date.
